Faculty News: New Book by Charles Matz

LIU Brooklyn English Professor Charles Matz's new book, The Joyful Sleepwalkers, came out this past spring and was presented at the Mondolibro bookshop in Belluno, Italy, on August 22, 2014.

The presentation, organized by Valentina Reolon, was sponsored by the Casa dei Beni Comuni and the Mondolibro bookshop. Julia Bisinella (an actor from Belluno but now part of the well-known Kairos Italy Theater in New York City theater scene) and Nanni Dorigo performed scenes from the book. The author, Charles Matz, teacher, poet, and performer, worked with Hallam Tennyson at the BBC London, with Norman Mailer in New York, and with Andrea Zanzotto in Italy, among many others. Matz lived for 20 years in Feltre, a small city near Belluno, where he taught at schools and at the University IULM. Matz defines the area as one in which he grew and matured as a writer and performer.

Workshop with Barbara Henning at Poets House

LIU Brooklyn English Professor Barbara Henning will be leading a workshop called From Journal to Poem at Poets House.

Here's Professor Henning's description "In this workshop we’ll develop multiple ways of gathering material through writing and experimenting with journaling, researching and taking notes. We’ll explore walking/writing meditation, layered journaling, collaging from news and other resources, and more. Readings will be from Matsuo Basho, Harry Mathews, Jack Kerouac, Harryette Mullen, William Carlos Williams, Helene Cixous, Bernadette Mayer and Ed Sanders, among others. Students will leave the class with a collection of five poems or short prose pieces."

Barbara Henning is the author of three novels and nine books of poetry, her most recent a collection of poetry and prose, A Swift Passage. Born in Detroit, she has lived in New York City since 1983. A long-time yoga practitioner, she brings this knowledge and discipline to her writing and her teaching at Naropa University and Long Island University in Brooklyn, where she is Professor Emerita. A new book of poems, A Day Like Today, is forthcoming in 2015 from Negative Capability Press.

In remembrance of the 50th anniversary of the Selma Voting March, award-winning playwright Catherine Filloux (formerly an adjunct professor in the LIU Brooklyn English Department) brings to life the interconnected stories of Viola Liuzzo, none civil rights activist, and Tommy Rowe, FBI informant, undercover with the Ku Klux Klan. Marietta Hedges plays both roles.

Reading of Yani Perez's Play GOD DON'T EXIST FOR GIRLS FROM BROOKLYN

Over the summer, "God Don't Exist for Girls in Brooklyn," a new play by Yani Perez (Creative Writing MFA alum) was performed at New Perspectives Theatre Company's Women’s Work Short Play Festival.

Now we are pleased to note that The Naked Expedition Project will present a reading of Yani's play (along with plays by six other playwrights) as part of a reading series at Theaterlab NYC.

About the play: Global violence against girls is no surprise, but are we capable of confronting it in our own backyard? Two sisters from Brooklyn get a terrible lesson that far too many girls around the world already know.

The hero of Horrigan's novel is a 21st-century Dorian Gray, an alienated young man searching for his life's purpose through a gallery of portrait paintings.  The novel won the 2010 Dana Award for Fiction and will be published next spring by Lethe Press.

"Actors with Accents" is a variety show produced by Patrick E. Horrigan and Eduardo Leanez. This Saturday's installment will feature music, comedy, drama, art, and puppetry, with performances by Inma Heredia, Alex Galper, Patrick E. Horrigan, John Sannuto, Basil Horn, Priyank Rastogi, Eduardo Leanez, Marianne van den Bergh, Gregory Couba, Vivian Varasdi, and T.J. Bohm.

Lewis Warsh is the author of over thirty volumes of poetry, fiction and autobiography, most recently One Foot Out the Door: Collected Stories (Spuyten Duyvil, 2014), A Place in the Sun (Spuyten Duyvil, 2010) and Inseparable: Poems 1995-2005 (Granary Books, 2008). He is coeditor of The Angel Hair Anthology and editor and publisher of United Artists Books. 

Warsh's fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous anthologies, including The Best American Poetry (1997, 2002, 2003) . He is recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, and The Fund for Poetry. He has also received an Editor’s Fellowship Award from the Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines, and the James Shestack prize from The American Poetry Review. Mimeo Mimeo #7 (2012) featured his poetry, fiction and collages, and a bibliography of his work as an editor and publisher. He has taught at Naropa University, The Poetry Project, and SUNY Albany. He currently teaches in the MFA program in creative writing at Long Island University (Brooklyn). Alien Abduction, a new book of poems, is forthcoming from Ugly Duckling Presse 
in 2015.

Michael Forstrom was born in Sweden and raised in England and Canada before the family settled outside Minneapolis, MN. As an adult, he has lived in various places in the U.S., as well as in England and Kenya, and earned degrees from Carleton College, The New School for Social Research, and 
SUNY Buffalo. For the last ten years, he has lived outside New Haven, CT and worked at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale. He has published film reviews, short fiction, and poetry, including two pamphlets, the elusive object (Phylum Press) and The Icon Painter. In 2012, he held residencies at VSC and Millay Colony where he completed 
a mixed-genre piece and embarked on a new work exploring the effects of dispersal, illness, and telecommunications on the contemporary family. Four Seasons (Spuyten Duyvil, 20140 is his first novella.
