Welcome to The Longest Island!

This is the official blog of the English Department at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University.

Here you will find the latest information about special events sponsored by the Department: poetry and fiction readings, faculty and guest lectures, open house events and holiday parties. We will also use the blog to post announcements of other important events and dates for your calendar.

In the sidebar at the right, you can search for past announcements about particular types of events, arranged according to their labels (i.e., tags, but Blogger calls them labels). Other labels will be added as necessary but as of today's date, these are the labels:

Advisement: Information for undergraduate English majors about registration, advisement, and mentoring.

Downtown Brooklyn: The literary magazine of the Brooklyn Campus, published by the English Department.

Edelman Prizes: Annual prizes given for the best essays written in undergraduate English classes.

English Club: For majors and non-majors interested in English, the English Club hosts regular literary and professional events.

English Department Faculty Forum: Works in Progress: An opportunity for English Department faculty to circulate their research among their English Department colleagues.
(Note: The English Department Faculty Forum program is separate from the Brooklyn Campus Faculty Forum program, which is hosted by The Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and features presentations by faculty from across the disciplines.)

Excellence Awards: Given to graduating seniors and graduate students with outstanding grade point averages.

Hyneman Awards: These prizes are given each spring to the best poem and short story by a student in the MFA program.

MFA Reading Series: Readings by students and faculty in the Department's creative writing programs.

Open House: An annual event devoted to recruitment of new English majors (and minors).

Parascandola Award: This award is given annually to an outstanding graduate student in the English Department.

Paumanok: The Department's annual lecture on American literature and culture, given each spring by an expert in the field.

Sigma Tau Delta: Our chapter of the international English honor society.

Voices: Voices of the Rainbow, the Department's long-running series of poetry and fiction readings by well-known writers from outside the campus community.

Also in the sidebar, you can browse the month-by-month archive of past announcements.
