Louis Parascandola & Grad Students Visit Poe Cottage

Graduate English students Tatum Crawford, Cristina Cutrone, Lydia Flores, Leah Jones, Huma Sheikh, Tania Francis (Education), and Professor Louis Parascandola visited the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in the Bronx as part of a class on Poe, his life, and his cultural legacy in summer session 2. The cottage was Poe's final home and the place where he composed "Annabel Lee," "The Bells," and "The Cask of Amontillado" among other works.

Chialun Chang: New Poem

Chialun Chang (Creative Writing, MFA, 2014) has a new poem, "Mississippi River," on Literary Hub, whose poetry editor, Adam Fitzgerald, calls her "one of the most incredibly talented young poets to emerge recently in America."

Please join us for our second reading on Wednesday, July 27. We have a great lineup of poets on deck to kick off the poetry festival on Governor's Island that weekend—Nadia Alexis, Natalie Eilbert, Cahmongne Felix, Ricardo Maldonado, and Willie Perdomo.

As last time, the reading will take place upstairs at 61 Local (F/G Bergen St or any train at Atlantic Terminal).

News from Betsy Hall: Judge for NCTE Writing Prize

Professor Betsy Hall (Assistant Director of the LIU English Department's First-Year Writing Program) was invited by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to serve as a judge for the national Norman Mailer Student Writing Award. She served as a second round judge for the Four-Year College Creative Non-fiction Award, which includes a $5000 cash prize.
