LIUFF Sponsors Event in Support of Equity for Adjunct Faculty

The Long Island University Faculty Federation (i.e., the LIU Brooklyn faculty union) is sponsoring an event to which all students, faculty, administrators, and staff are invited. The union's announcement is as follows:

"The first annual National Adjunct Walkout Day is Wednesday, February 25.  

"While we are prevented by our contract from participating in a walkout, we are marking the day with an event sponsored by the LIUFF.  

"Please join us on Wednesday Feb. 25th from 12 - 2 pm in Pratt 321 in the Learning Communities Lounge. 

"Drop by, have some coffee and pie, meet fellow adjuncts and concerned full-time faculty, and join the conversation about adjunct equity."

A Reading by Jake Matkov at Bureau of General Services--Queer Division

Creative Writing MFA candidate Jake Matkov will be reading with Wo Chan and Jayson Smith at Bureau of General Services--Queer Division, a cultural center, bookstore, and event space at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. 

This reading is the fifth installment in a series called Newfangled, which is made up of poetry readings by emerging poets and hosted by Robert Siek.

We announced last week that a poem by Daniel Soto (Creative Writing MFA candidate) had been selected as one of 2014's best.

Here is some additional news...

Daniel is a finalist for the 2014 Ræd Leaf International Poetry Award and will have five poems published in the Ræd Leaf Poetry Award Anthology 2014. Read more about Ræd Leaf Poetry (India).

In April, Daniel will be a guest lecturer (on the subject of gentrification in NYC) in Professor Diane Wong's course Government 1101 at Cornell University. Professor Wong has assigned one of Daniel's articles ("Gentrifyng New York City's Underground"), from his series at LatinoRebels.com.

Daniel's poems will appear in the forthcoming anthology Fathers, Fathering, and Fatherhood: Queer Chicano Desire and Belonging (Gibrán Güido and Adelaida R. Del Castillo, Editors).

One-Credit Course Connected to Gary Shteyngart's Paumanok Lecture

As we announced earlier, this year's Paumanok Lecture on American Literature and Culture will be delivered by Gary Shteyngart.

In connection to the lecture, Professor Louis Parascandola will be teaching a one-credit course, English 203.

Russian American writer Gary Shteyngart is the author of the highly praised and best selling works Little Failure (a memoir) and three novels Super Sad True Love Story, Absurdistan and The Russian Debutante's Handbook. All  of these writings,  poignantly and with an abundance of humor,  discuss the author's experiences as an immigrant learning his ways in America. 

Students will attend a reading/discussion by the author at LIU from 6:30-8 on Monday, February 9 (we will meet at 6 in H 464, for a brief introduction to the author's work) and then meet two other dates (dates and times will be arranged) to discuss Little Failure and Super Sad True Love Story. Students will write short papers on the reading and the two works.
