Rehearsals begin October 7 and run through November, evenings after 6pm & Saturdays.  Rehearsal Schedule will be set once the show is cast.

Sandra Cisneros Will Deliver This Year's Paumanok Lecture!


The acclaimed author Sandra Cisneros will be delivering the annual Paumanok Lecture on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 6:30 PM, in the Kumble Theater.  The event is free and open to the public.

Please consider bringing your classes or offering extra credit for students who attend. Perhaps you could assign some of Cisneros’ writings in your course.

Also, Professor Louis Parascandola (English) will be teaching a one-credit course tied to Cisneros and the Paumanok.

Cisneros will be reading from and discussing her forthcoming memoir, A House of My Own.  Professor Jessica Hagedorn (English / Creative Writing MFA Program) will conduct a brief on-stage interview, and Cisneros will take questions from the audience.


Professors: the reading is free and open to the is free and open to the public, but the Kumble Theater is asking for attendees to RSVP so they can know how many people to expect and save seats for LIU students. If you plan to bring your classes to the event (and we hope you do!), RSVP with a head countYou can do this the first week of class.

SANDRA CISNEROS is the author of the highly acclaimed novel The House on Mango Street, and the story collection, Woman Hollering Creek. In addition to other novels and short stories, she has published collections of poetry, essays, and, most recently, a memoir, A House of My Own.  She is the recipient of numerous awards, including National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, the Lannan Literary Award, the American Book Award, the Thomas Wolfe Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship. Her work has been translated into more than 20 languages. Cisneros is the founder of the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral and Macondo Foundations, which serve creative writers.

Jessica Hagedorn to Be Honored by Filipino American National Historical Society

Jessica Hagedorn, director of the Creative Writing MFA Program, will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society at the Opening Ceremonies for Filipino American History Month on October 2, 2015.


Harry McEwan: New Work in Your Impossible Voice

The latest issue (#9) of the online literary magazine Your Impossible Voice features "Trashed," by Harry McEwan (MFA, Creative Writing, 2015). You may recall that Harry read this piece at the 2015 MFA graduation reading in May 2015.

Barbara Henning, Chia-Lun Chang, and Tony Iantosca: Reading at St. Mark's Bookshop

Professor Barbara Henning (Professor of English), Chia-Lun Chang (Creative Writing MFA, 2014), and Tony Iantosca (Adjunct Professor of English and Creative Writing MFA, 2012) will be reading together at St. Mark's Bookshop, on 28 September 2015. 
This is the fourth event in a new series called Heart Star Salon, which is being run by two alums of the Creative Writing MFA program: Sarah Anne Wallen (2013) and Lisa Rogal (2013).

Katrinka Moore: Reading from New Book

Katrinka Moore, an alumna (MA, Teaching of Writing) and a former adjunct professor in English, will be reading at Cornelia Street Cafe, on September 24, 2015, at 6PM, along with Sarah Stern, Elizabeth Poreba, and Guillermo Filice Castro.

Poetry by Daniel Soto to Appear in The Border Crossed Us: An Anthology to End Apartheid (Vagabond Press)

Work by Daniel Soto, Creative Writing MFA candidate, has been accepted for publication in the anthology The Border Crossed Us: An Anthology to End Apartheid (Vagabond Press), selection by Mark Lipman, with a forward by Luis J. Rodriguez. 

The book is set for publication on October 12, 2015 (Indigenous Peoples' Day / Columbus Day), and there will be a national reading tour, which will include NYC, over the course of this fall and next spring. More updates will follow.

All students in the MFA program are expected to attend orientation, as it is a time to welcome new and returning students and to kick off the fall semester.
